Mopane Rose
What’s in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
Inspiration comes from many places. Sometimes conscious, sometimes not. The latter was the case when we were searching for the Mopane Rose. When Stuart designed and named our latest fabric “Mopane Rose” to him it was a no brainer. When we asked him what and where this name came from his reply was, “Well its from the Mopane tree, but just Google it for some more information.” Well there we sat. Googling this and that, different spellings, different sites but still, nothing.
While we all thought Stuart had finally gone off the deep end and this ‘rose’ didn’t exist, the last resort was to call a friend who had apparently witnessed this phenomenon of nature. And this is how the story goes…
The Mopane rose is a beautiful flower shaped form that grows out of the wood and bark on the Mopane tree. It is from a virus/fungus that is found only on the Mopane tree. While Stuart had been traveling through Southern Africa, he saw these beautiful objects being sold by local tradesmen as sculptures.
This is where the inspiration came from to design and weave our new offering. A wool and cotton blanket, vibrant in colour and texture. Kind of looking forward to winter to use this beauty.
