South African Hand Weavers
There are only a few of South African hand weavers remaining. Eager to see this age-old craftsmanship in action, we stopped at Barrydale Hand Weavers on Route 62 to say hello to this great company.
THE BARRYDALE HAND WEAVERS
If you travel along Route 62 between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn you will past through Barrydale, a characterful little town with snippets of farm life and some pretty amazing creative talents. The one that did catch our eye and heart was The Barrydale Hand Weavers.
Carol and Tivane train and mentor local people in the fine art of hand weaving. We loved the simple tactile nature of all their products, and were encouraged to see age old art of hand weaving in use. Amongst their range, they make lovely pure cotton kitchen linens and recycled off cut selvage carpets.
The weavery is open to the public, and is a great stop if you’re every travelling up Route 62.
Planning a Route 62 trip? Check out some our favourites stops along with the way with our Garden Route Roadtrip blog.

Hi I am one of the few weavers that sell my work left, I don’t have a workshop but weave and then try to sell my own weaving, Here are quite a few weavers in Pretoria. I also judged Bloemshow’s weaving and spinning, I think we need someone to do a website/book/article about weavers in SA workshops and individuals
Lyniel Traut
Hi, Marlene Toerien
I would like to get more information from you with regards to weaving and spinning. I am based in Cape Town and would love to
see what you do and how long it takes to complete a product
I am an individual and not a company.
Maybe we can share contact numbers after you email me.
Marlene Toerien
HI Mungo Design what do you see as handweavers as I didn’t get a reply to my comment of 25 April, and I think you see any weavers working on their own as bored housewifes and not as honest weavers who also want to sell their work, I did visit Old NIck’s a few years back, and had a visit with Stuart.
Mungo Retail
Hi Marlene, Thanks for your comment sorry we didnt reply sooner. It is great to see all hand weaving happening in South Africa. As that is how Stuart started his textile career! Please drop an email if you have any more questions or comment and will be happy to chat further.

Hi Jean, Its 2 years since you wrote your letter regarding looms you have for sale. I suppose you have sold them by now. Can you, or anyone else reading this letter, tell me where I can get a loom in South Africa. I have been searching on the internet but to no avail. I am from Sasolburg in the Free State.
Jon Pieters
Beste groete.

Linda
Hi, If anybody has looms to sell or is looking to buy, please send an email to capeguildofweavers@gmail.com. Our members often sell their equipment or are looking to buy something, so you can send photos, information about the loom and the price you require. We will circulate the information among our members and maybe bring weaver and loom together 🙂
Lulu
Thanks for the info Linda! I sent an email to this address this week with some photos of a South African loom that somehow ended up in Alberta, Canada! It’s beautiful and very professionally made but no makers mark. The seller thinks it was homemade but that’s all the info I could get. Hoping maybe someone at your guild could tell me more about it, whether they recognize it or can at least tell me the possible type of dark ‘walnut’ wood it’s made from. Fingers crossed! 🙂
