Surfs Up! Making a Cameo at the Corona Jbay Open
Our story starts innocently enough – chatting about surfing with our MD, Dax.
Dax: Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could somehow get Mungo towels involved in the JBay Open?
Monique: I know someone who knows someone.
And so our ambush marketing began…
Monique Dokter, Head of Marketing at Old Nick Village, shares her story:
Long story short, we snuck in the back door and provided Kikois for the chill zone, where the surfers hang out and jacuzzi after their heats, and Folly Beach Towels for the surfers’ shower zone. All personalised with the individuals’ names embroidered on each towel. Pretty cool.
And so, with not much persuasion, I head to JBay to check it out. Super Tubes delivers – a hot summer’s day in July, perfect waves, a good buzz and a mass of holiday-makers hoping to catch a glimpse of their surfing heroes. That was me – hoping to catch one of them with a Mungo towel draped over their shoulder.
After a couple of days of no surf, the anticipation for some action was high. We oohed and aahed watching the world’s best shredding those perfectly formed waves. It’s not called Super Tubes for nothing – just when you think that guy is toast, out he pops fist-pumping his awesome ride.
We’re told the surfers were super-stoked…and not just with the waves. Our towels will travel to all corners of the surfing world: Hawaii, Brazil, Japan, Australia, France, New Zealand and even USA.
The Folly Beach Towel is one of our Mungo favourites. This towel was a product of a “weaver’s folly” – a mistake made on the warp. In our case, this led to a ‘happy accident’ and two beautiful sea-spired colourways (read more about this comedy of errors here).
This towel is big, bright, highly absorbent and epitomizes that summer feeling. It’s also named after the quaint town of Folly Beach, a surfer’s haven in South Carolina, just south of Charleston where we have recently opened a new shop.
Farewell Folly. Spread the love.
