The Bijou is our adventure towel, ideal for impromptu ventures to the beach, the mountains – to nature on your doorstep.
After a period of limited movement, the Bijou towel is a companion for our rediscovery of open spaces. Compact, elegant and versatile, it is the perfect roll-up-and-go option designed for ease of movement and storage.
The Bijou is made from 100% cotton, sourced from various sites in Southern Africa and spun in Pietermaritzburg, before being crafted at our mill in Plettenberg Bay. It is the latest in our range of flat weave towels; a combination of honey and diamond weaving that is slightly looser, adding texture and giving the fabric a luxurious ‘handle’ or feel.
Unlike the more mainstream terry loop design, flat weaves are characteristically lighter and more compact, while still highly absorbent and quick drying.
The Bijou is elegant, versatile and affordable – and being smaller than the other towels in the range it’s also perfect as a large towel for children.
As with all Mungo fabrics, the Bijou is eco-friendly; natural fibres mean low bulk for the washing load while the towel’s longevity means it won’t end up in landfill. This towel is made to last and its natural fibres will gain softness and feel over time.

Amazing towels!
We just got our first towels. We decided to go for 2 different colors (Canary and Flamingo) and the towels are absolutely beautiful. They dry fast so that’s a plus when the kids jump into the pool every 30 minutes. Can’t wait to get more of those! Will be in Plettenberg Bay in May and will definitely visit the factory and hopefully find some more treasures.

I’ve been building my Mungo collection over the years. It started when I was a postgrad student and had to wait for the annual sale or add them to my birthday wish list.
Now that I’ve got a real job, I can afford to spoil myself a little more often!
My partner is from the UK, and due to the lockdown of 2020, we were unable to see each other for about 9 months. He’s finally managed to move out to SA, and I couldn’t think of a more fitting “first new house” purchase than a set of the Bijou towels: one in Canary, one in Lido. They have pride of place in our master bathroom – although I still have the very first set of towels I bought (Itawuli).
