The Double Cloth
Double cloths make use of a unique weaving technique, in which two cloths are woven simultaneously on one loom. Designed to increase the weight and thickness of a fabric, the face of a double cloth fabric is effectively disconnected from the back except at specific connecting points called ‘interlacings’. This is accomplished either by raising the back warp above the face filling (known as stitching from back to face) or by lowering the face warp below the back filling (stitching from face to back). Each side maintains its own structural integrity and can be identified as two distinct fabrics.
Our double cloth masks are woven on our Dornier looms, and have a soft cotton face and a linen backing.
The fibre facts
After much prototyping and refining of designs, cotton and linen were selected for (among others) their soft, durable and breathable properties. Linen, which forms the bulk of the fibre content, is particularly quick drying, hypoallergenic and sustainable… In fact we’re such believers of linen masks that we wrote a blog here.
Please note that these are not medical-grade masks and have not been medically approved. However, as research is showing, cloth masks can provide some prevention of the spread of the virus. These masks will help to limit transmission via coughing or sneezing of symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals (COVID-19 may be contagious for up to 14 days without presenting symptoms).
Available in packs of 2
Our masks are designed, woven, sewn, pressed and packed at the Mungo in Plettenberg Bay under strict sanitation procedures. As an extra precaution we recommend you wash and iron your mask before first use.
Wear and care
Each mask has an elastic tie and toggle to ensure an easily adjustable and snug fit over the nose, mouth and chin. An additional aluminum insert ensures a close-fitting design over the nose area, which can be removed when washing.
While in use, avoid touching your face, and ensure that hands are washed before removing the mask. Hot wash in a soap solution after use. Steam iron to press back into shape. For detailed information on mask etiquette, follow this guidance by the WHO.
